Volunteer for Variety

Volunteers play a huge role in the work that Variety does. With more than 200 fundraisers and special events each year, Variety receives assistance from community-based groups and over 4,000 dedicated volunteers from all over the province. We are looking for people who are committed, flexible and are able to show initiative. You can make a difference right now in the life of a child.

Benefits
At Variety we value your time, enthusiasm and passion. Variety volunteers will enjoy meeting and working with like-minded people who are committed to helping children and their families. Some of the rewards cited by volunteers include; increased energy and happiness and a renewed enthusiasm for life. Volunteering offers an opportunity to discover and enhance your strengths and talents while increasing your social and professional network. No matter how you become involved with Variety, you can be sure that you will be making a difference in the lives of others as well as your own.

People volunteer for many reasons and many feel rewarded by the good feeling they get from helping kids. Being able to meet people and have fun while working towards a worthwhile cause is enough. However, Variety also shows appreciation to volunteers by thanking them, providing references and confirmation letters and hosting volunteer appreciation events. There is a recognition program based on number of hours and years of service. For information contact the Manager of Volunteer Services at 1.800.381.2040.

Ways to get involved:

Special Events
Special Event volunteer opportunities exist throughout BC. Become a part of the Variety Show of Hearts Telethon, the Variety Children’s Radiothon, Boat for Hope or any number of Variety events happening in your community.

In the Variety Office
Volunteer in our Burnaby office, assisting with office administration, data entry, mailings and phone calls.

Volunteer Leader
Take the lead and try a challenging position, such as event volunteer supervisor, recognition assistant, data entry assistant, trainer, orientation coordinator or youth program coordinator.

Special Projects
These short and medium-term projects are perfect for someone who likes a defined task rather than an on-going responsibility. These projects are ideal for students, seniors who travel a lot, etc.

Internships
Occasionally, unpaid internships are welcomed at the Variety office. These internships are usually directed at students interested in gaining experience in office administration, volunteer coordination and event planning. Please note that there are no bookkeeping or accounting-related internships. International students who are comfortable and proficient in English are welcome to apply.

Volunteering with Children
Although Variety fundraises to help children who have special needs, Variety does not provide direct services to children. There are no regular volunteer positions that involve working with children. However, several Variety events involving children do require volunteer assistance.

Getting to the Variety Office
Coming to volunteer at the Variety office? We are located at 4300 Still Creek Drive in Burnaby. Access via the Willingdon North exit off Hwy 1 changed over a year ago but is not yet reflected on Google Maps. Take the exit, stay in right lane and make the first right onto Eastbrook Parkway. Loop around past Costco and turn left at the stop sign onto Still Creek Drive. If you are coming from North Burnaby travelling south on Willingdon you can still turn right onto Still Creek. Check Google Maps satellite photo but note that some of the points of interest need adjustment.
